IRCC Revokes SDS and NSE Programmes and Benefits
Canada, being one of the top destinations for work and travel amongst international students, has experienced a major increase in temporary residents due to the annual influx of international students and temporary foreign workers.
In a bid to control the alarmingly high rate of immigration, IRCC has recently implemented stringent measures and policies including ending the 10- year multiple visa entry, increasing the cost of living for international students and imposing procedures for verification of acceptance letters into Canadian universities.
In most recent events, IRCC as published on their official website, had officially ended the Student Direct Stream (SDS) and Nigeria Student Express (NSE) programmes on November 8th, 2024. This move was aimed to improve fairness and in the integrity of the Canadian immigration system. This would also help to curb the vulnerabilities in its system such as fraud and exploitation.
All prospective international students are now expected to apply through the regular study permit stream. While this gives equal opportunities to all students despite their citizenship, processing times will become slower for international students from countries who previously benefitted from these programmes. Students will also be required to present Guaranteed Investment Certificates as proof of funds, all other previously accepted documents have become invalid.
Nigeria and India have had the highest population of international students in Canada and may be the most affected by these recent changes and tightened restrictions in Canada's immigration policies which makes it harder to settle long term in Canada.
However, students that had already paid before 2pm on November 8th, 2024 will have their applications processed according to previous guidelines, ensuring that they enjoy the benefits of faster processing times.
